Brockport Wins NCGA East Regional Title; Castellaneta Named East Gymnast of the Year

The SUNY Brockport gymnastics team won its second consecutive National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) East Region Championship and secured a spot at next weekend’s national championship after posting a season-high score of 192.8000 at the six team regional meet on Saturday hosted by Springfield College.  Senior Lexi Castellaneta was named the NCGA East Region Gymnast of the Year for the Golden Eagles.  Brockport has now won nine regional championships dating back to their first regional title in 2004. 

Brockport has won the east region crown in four of the last five seasons and they have won seven regional titles since 2010.  The defending NCGA National Champions will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Ithaca College for Nationals.

The Golden Eagles won three out of the four team events.  They posted a season-high on the vault (48.525) and sophomore Sydney Schumaker tied the school-record (9.850) originally set by Brockport’s Stephanie Mager as she won the vault at the 2017 NCGA East Region Championships.

Sophomore Sydney Schumaker tied the school-record on the vault as she was crowned the East Region champion with a career-high score of 9.850. Emma Grace Sargent placed second on the vault with a career-best score of 9.775.  Lexi Castellaneta placed sixth on the vault with a score of 9.675 and Lauren Blair tied for seventh with a score of 9.625.  Nicole Jackson rounded out the top ten finishers with a score of 9.600, while Kyra Figurelli tied for 14th with a score of 9.550.

Brockport won the bars with a team score of 47.875 and they placed six gymnasts in the top 13.  Taylor Bushey and Gabbi Gare tied for second with a score of 9.675, while Sargent tied for fifth with a score of 9.575. Schumaker tied for seventh with a score of 9.550 while Rachel Swick placed 12th(9.400) and Nicole Jackson tied for 13th (9.375).

Natalie Galioto tied for second in the region with a score of 9.700 to lead the way for the Golden Eagles on the beam.  Lexi Castellaneta placed in the top 10 as she posted a score of 9.600, while Emmie White and Jensen Todd tied for 11th with a score of 9.575.  Olivia Stinnette rounded out Brockport’s top five finishers with a score of 9.350, good for 17th overall out of 36 competitors.

Brockport’s 48.600 on the floor marks their second highest score of the season.  East Region Gymnast of the Year Lexi Castellaneta placed second in the event with a score of 9.775, while Naimah Muhammad and Kirsten Paultre tied for fifth with a score of 9.725.  Natalie Galioto placed seventh with a score of 9.700 and Kyra Figurelli tied for ninth with a score of 9.675.
