Madison, Wis. – January 31, 2017 – The University of Wisconsin – La Crosse’s Samantha Wiekamp (Clear Lake, S.D.) and Kari Willett (Gainesville, Va.) were both recognized for their standout performances this past weekend, as the duo earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Gymnast of the Week honors, announced Tuesday.
Wiekamp, a junior Marketing and Psychology double major for the Eagles, was named the WIAC All-Around Gymnast of the Week after capturing the all-around (38.550) title at the Lindenwood University (Mo.) Triangular January 28. Her score of 38.550 is currently the highest among all National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) teams. Along with winning the all-around, Wiekamp tied for fourth on the floor exercise (9.750) and tied for sixth on the vault (9.625). It marks Wiekamp’s second career WIAC All-Around Gymnast of Week honor, also earning the award in 2014-15.
Willett, an Exercise and Sport Science major at La Crosse, was selected the WIAC Event Specialist of the Week after scoring 9.725 on all three events at the Lindenwood (Mo.) Triangular. She tied for second on the vault while finishing fourth on the balance band sixth on the floor exercise at the Division II national champions (Lindenwood). Willett has now earned three career WIAC Gymnast of the Week honors after being named the event specialist and all-around athlete of the week in 2013-14.
