Springfield, Mass. – January 23, 2017 – Cortland’s Rachel Filipski (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Brockport’s Candis Kowalik (Warwick, R.I.) have been recognized for their impressive performances this past weekend, as each earned National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) East Gymnast of the Week honors, announced on Monday afternoon.
Rachel Filipski, a sophomore on the SUNY Cortland women’s gymnastics program, posted a career-best all-around score of 36.00 in Cortland’s dual meet at Division-I Cornell University. Filipski recorded a trio of career-best scores, including in the all-around (36.000), on the uneven bars (8.050) and on the balance beam (8.850). On vault, Filipski came up just short of her career-best score of 9.700, as she notched a 9.650, good for third overall.
Candis Kowalik continued the strong start to her sophomore campaign, picking up two first-place finishes in a tri-meet victory against Ithaca College and Rhode Island College. The Warwick, R.I. native scored her season-high on the beam, a 9.700 to take the event, and picked up another first in the meet on the floor, with a 9.675. Kowalik also placed on the vault, with a score of 9.250.
